Doug Rink is on the ballot for Post 1 Gilmer County Commissioner in the Republican primary May 21.
As a retired journalist who regularly covered local government, he brings a unique perspective to the position.
In addition to his journalism work, Rink also previously owned and managed single-family residential rentals, providing families with affordable homes. This unique combination of roles has afforded him a deep understanding of community dynamics and a strong desire to represent the people of Gilmer County in facing our current challenges.
As commissioner, Rink would adhere to conservative principles and support the local Republican Party.
“I have constitutional qualifications to be Gilmer County commissioner,” he says. “I want to bring new things to the table.”
Some of his priorities include bringing fire and EMS services up to levels that match the population. Rink will also prioritize the maintenance of roads, bridges and other infrastructure to prevent basic government services from falling behind as the population grows.
To address the needs of the young and old alike, he believes it’s important to develop a comprehensive, systemic plan for recreation amenities to avoid piecemeal promises and ensure efficient goal achievement.
He will also give priority to the proposed new animal shelter which has been partially funded but has failed to move forward. He’s hoping to tackle the issue of animal neglect and abandonment in the county.
Rink wants to preserve the beauty of the county for generations to come by fostering Gilmer’s prosperity while safeguarding its unique traditions and heritage through transparent planning and governance. He wants to ensure the protection of neighborhoods while promoting Gilmer’s agricultural and tourism-based economy.
“You the people chose who will be your next commissioner, and I hope I win your trust to that point to earn your vote,” he says.
