Learning folk songs and other mountain music

Megan Williams, right, teaches Sheila Clayton, left, and Bettie Early, center, to play the old-time fiddle tune “Mississippi Sawyer” on the lap (or “mountain”) dulcimer during a class at Gilmer Arts last Tuesday. Williams said she began playing the acoustic stringed instrument in 2004 after attending classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. “I’ve always been interested in folk music and had played the guitar for years (before) falling in love with the mountain dulcimer,” she added.
