An Ellijay man died Saturday afternoon when he wrecked his motorcycle on the Gilmer County side of Fort Mountain, authorities said.

Douglas Grover Kent, 70, of Cartecay River Estates, suffered fatal injuries and was dead on arrival April 6 at North Georgia Medical Center, according to Deputy Coroner Melissa Waddell. Gilmer 911 received the call just after 2 p.m., she reported.

Kent was traveling east going down the mountain on Highway 52 West when he failed to make a curve, went off an embankment and lost control of the motorcycle, according to a Georgia State Patrol accident report.

“The right side of (the motorcycle) made slight contact with a tree (and) continued … for approximately 10 feet and struck another tree with the right front portion of (the motorcycle),” said Sgt. First Class Thomas Jackson, commander of the Blue Ridge post. “(The motorcycle’s) front tire, fender and crash bar became entangled with the tree trunk (and) the impact with the second tree caused (the motorcycle) … (to) travel another 10 feet where (it) struck a third tree.”

Waddell said a doctor from Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga was riding in the area on a bicycle and stopped to try and help Kent, but “there was not much he could do,” she said.

The use of alcohol or drugs was not suspected, according to the GSP report.

A funeral service was held at the chapel of Logan Funeral Home April 10, with interment following in the cemetery of Cartecay United Methodist Church.
